One Out of Ten
Obama must sling mud, or he will get buried
If the last 18 months have been a riveting, rollercoaster-of-a-ride in terms of the presidential election, then the last two weeks have taken us on a series of gut-wrenching loops and I’m still trying to find my bearings.
I was one of the record breaking viewers to watch the Democratic and yes, Republican National Conventions. For me, the Democratic offering was a cathartic and emotional experience and it was staged in pitch-perfect fashion for this former Hillary Clinton supporter.
Obama frames marriage equality as civil right
August 16 was a rather historic day for marriage equality. America’s favorite lesbian, comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres married her long-time partner, actress Portia de Rossi in their Los Angeles manse. It was one of the highest profile ceremonies of its kind to take place since the California Supreme Court legalized same sex nuptials in the Golden State earlier this year.
‘Maverick’ John McCain an able flip-flopper
I’ve made the mistake over the past year or so of still referring to the likely Republican presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain, as a maverick. For what was once true of the senator from Arizona during his insurgent 2000 presidential primary fight with George W. Bush is no longer the case.
‘60 Minutes’ ghost no longer haunts Belleville
I’ve lived in or around Belleville, Illinois for 17 years now, so it was with a great sense of well, Pride that I attended the first annual Belleville Pride Event on June 21. Several hundred gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) and allied revelers from throughout the Metro East and The Lou attended the celebration which was sponsored by Metro-East Gays and Straights and Club Escapade.
Democratic détente should decide VP drama
At long last the Democratic Party has its presumptive nominee, Sen. Barack Obama from Illinois. The epic 16-month battle between Obama and his last standing opponent, long time front runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York was hard fought with each raising record numbers of money while accumulating more votes than any other primary candidates in history.
California dream could unite the right
The California Supreme Court ruling on May 15, which entitles gay men and lesbians to legally marry in the Golden State, ignited passions on both sides of the political divide. California now joins the commonwealth of Massachusetts in allowing gays and lesbians to tie the knot, and an impending ruling by the Connecticut Supreme Court expected at any time could really make matters interesting if they side with marriage equality.
Whose fault?
Have you ever noticed that whenever a natural disaster hits some right wing loon comes out of their parishioner-paid-for mansion to assign biblical blame? Usually it’s the gay community who’s at fault. Sometimes it’s the feminists. And a good part of the time they just blame secular society in general.
After Hurricane Katrina in 2005 the right wingers said the gay community, with its sinful Mardi Gras and even naughtier Southern Decadence traditions were responsible for nearly wiping New Orleans off of the map.
Not guilty by association
Unless you were in the Middle East accompanying Dick Cheney on his latest “Iraq’s goin’ great” tour, you’ve undoubtedly heard by now that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama gave arguably the most historic speech on race in America in 45 years.
Constitutional Amendment: Them’s Fightin’ Words
Well, talk about getting the proverbial ball rolling! It’s on folks. The war is here, the lines have been drawn and we are at the dawn of the fight of our generation.
As of press time, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s Valentine’s Day decision that the "City by the Bay" should not deprive gays of the right to marry has not only garnered over 3,000 same sex nuptials, but has also brought forth the true colors of the self-proclaimed "compassionate conservative," President George W. Bush.
