California Supreme Court Denies Petition to Remove Anti-Gay Marriage Proposition from November Ballot
The California Supreme Court has denied a petition to remove Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriage, from the state’s November ballot, according to a press release issued by the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
The NCLR, in collaboration with Equality California, the American Civil Liberties Union and Lambda Legal, issued the following statement about the petition’s denial:
“We’re disappointed, but this ruling does not affect the campaign against Prop. 8 in any way,” according to the release. “We have been focused on continuing the election and moving forward, talking to voters and working in the precincts—asking Californians to Vote No on 8. Californians do not want their Constitution to single out people to be treated differently. We are confident they will vote NO in November to make sure everyone is treated equally under the law.”
The ruling will have no effect on the current legal status of gay marriage in California.
