Hundreds Attend Engelhard Memorial

Scores of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied supporters joined friends, family, co-workers and comrades to celebrate the life of Missouri Highway Patrolman Dennis Engelhard, January 30. The Memorial Eucharist was held at Christ Church Cathedral and followed by a reception open to family and friends.
On Christmas Day Engelhard was struck and killed while assisting at an accident in Eureka, Missouri. He leaves behind his partner of 15-years, Kelly Glossip and a step-son; both of whom were omitted from Engelhard’s obituary. The tragedy was felt deeply by the local LGBT community given that Missouri State employee benefits are not extended to same-sex couples, thus leaving Glossip and his son without Engelhard's pension.
The story of the Engelhard-Glossip family further illustrates the many rights and privileges which are denied committed gay and lesbian couples each day throughout the bi-state. In 2004 Missouri voters passed an amendment to the state constitution banning same sex marriage and civil unions.
A Memorial Fund has been established in Engelhard’s honor to support Glossip and his son. Contributions can be sent to:
