GLAAD Condemns FX Networks for Refusing to Correct Defamatory Statement

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has condemned FX Networks’ refusal to correct a defamatory representation made by an anti-gay activist on the reality television series “30 Days,” according to a press release from Monday.

The episode in question, which airs tonight, follows a woman opposed to GLBT families who must live with two gay men and their four adopted sons. The premise of the series is to examine social issues and immerse people in lives unlike their own for the titular 30 days in order to gain a new perspective.

While tonight’s episode features the stories of children raised by gay men and lesbians, it also features a statement made by Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council, an anti-gay activist organization, according to the release. Sprigg’s remarks about homosexuality, most of them emphasizing higher rates of sexual abuse and STI’s among the GLBT population, are not backed by scientific research although presented as undisputed factual information on the episode.

GLAAD and the Family Equality Council, a pro-gay family organization, contacted FX Networks and requested that the statement either be removed from the episode or that an expert in social science or child health correct the claim.

FX Networks has refused to take any sort of action to correct Sprigg’s statement, according to the release.
