2008 Elections

Sound off on local races, regional races, and the presedential race.

Once again the Republican party has called for anti gay planks in their national party platform. A Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

The gay community must rally together and win this election. We must defeat the Republicans on every front. From president down. It amazes me we have gays who call themselves Republicans. When the Republicans call us everything in the book. Ala Sally Kern.

I do not understand how some of our friends and relatives can vote for and support a party that does these things that the Republican party has done to the gay community? And don't give me but Bill Clinton signed DOMA. I know damned well Bill Clinton signed DOMA. I haven't forgiven him for it. The Democrats aren't perfect. But they haven't done the things the Republicans have done to and continue to do to us. And a good number of the Democrats do sponsor a lot of pro gay legislation. Whether to give gay municipal employees domestic partnership benefits, anti discrimination laws, civil union legislation or any number of other beneficial progressive legislation. When is the last time you heard of a Republican doing so?

No, what you do hear of is Republicans like Sally Kern of OK. Sally Kern has been going around to Republican groups and giving a speech saying:

Quote:
I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam.

She caught some flak for that speech, but not from Republicans. She received a standing ovation from her fellow Republican legislators.

Time and time again in city after city Republicans fight any progress gays make. Things you think any decent human would grant another. But not Republicans. Things like the right to visit your loved one in a hospital. No, in some cities they have fought a simple domestic partnership registry that granted nothing more. They have fought private companies giving insurance benefits to gay couple. They can't even tolerate us earning private insurance benefits. Evidently they don't want us to have health care

Yes and Republicans fight any and every possible law that comes up that might possibly be in favor of the gay community.

Do they stop there. No. They use us as a wedge issue to win favor with fundamentalist. Some Republicans who probably don't give a damn if we screw in the middle of a busy intersection find us real useful to manipulate the far religious right and use us.

How many examples do you want? How many speech's do you want from the likes of Sally Kern. How may Tom Delay's a calling Congressman Barney Frank, 'Barney Fag? I can give you countless examples of Republicans and their dirty tricks against gays. The Texas 2006 Republican Party platform reads like an anti gay manifesto. They don't even want gays to be eligible for the Americans with Disabilities Act. And they come awfully close to wanting to make it legal to assault a gay person if your religious beliefs command you to do so.

So I'll ask once again. Just how do you "exceptions" explain to your friends how you can vote for and support a party that does these things to your friends and loved ones.

Yet knowing some of the outright cruel and hurtful thing Republicans have and continue to do to gays just how do you justify supporting a Republican candidate. How do you feel when a friend of family member votes for someone from a party that does those things.

When the party stands up en masse and gives a standing ovation to Sally Kern after she has called us worse than terrorist. When out of pure meanness they try to deny us insurance and medical coverage from a private business.

So what if someone doesn't agree with everything the party stands for. Hating and hurting gays is a big deal. Voting for someone in the Republican party for other reasons still hurts us. Our rights are being denied. I can't think of anything much worse than equating a citizen with a terrorist and when the Republican party gives that person a standing ovation I can't understand how any person who claims to care about a gay friend can still vote Republican.
