It’s only a few days into the new year, and accolades for the last year are starting to pile in for St. Louis and its LGBT community.
Mobile social networking app Grindr’s own awards hailed Vital VOICE as the Best Local Gay News Outlet for St. Louis. The awards were voted on by Grindr users, who also selected Dieta Pepsi as the fiercest drag queen/nightlife personality, and Leon Braxton as the Local Hero/Community Advocate of the Year. Also among St. Louis’ winners were Just John’s for Favorite Gay Bar/Club, Attitudes Nightclub for Best Gay Night/Party and Charlie Buttons for Best DJ.

As if this wasn’t enough, LGBT magazine The Advocate named St. Louis one of the gayest cities in the United States in its 1/9 issue. (Number 15, to be precise): “What was founded in 1764 as a fur-trading outpost has become an LGBT beacon in the Midwest.” the article read. Attractions in the Grove, Central West End, Soulard, and Lafayette Square were cited as positive reasons for St. Louis’ ranking. The news come on the heels of the MEI Index rating St. Louis a 100 percent for its various LGBT inclusive benefits and non-discrimination protections.
